Central Manama fire victims to be rehabilitated

Manama

Offering solace to the victims of the Central Manama fire that left many migrant labourers homeless, the Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS) Labour, Safety and Welfare Committee has held a rehabilitation distribution programme on June 3.

MWPS provided the men with mattresses, bed sheets, pillows, kitchen utensils and other miscellaneous houseware items. Many of these items were donated by Ms. Mona Al Moyed. In addition gas stoves are being donated by Bahrain Finance Company (BFC) and they will be installed free of charge by Bahrain Gas Company.

In addition to the above and prior to the victims’ relocation to alternative accommodation, MWPS ensured that the 30 men were provided with daily cooked meals at a local restaurant and access to free medical attention provided by KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre. The victims were also provided with emergency packs containing one set of clothes, towels and toiletries.

MWPS Chairperson, Marietta Dias said, “We are very grateful to the all the generous people and companies who were able to assist with the supply of the items and all those who came along to assist in the distribution.”

As reported earlier, flames engulfed the three-storey building in Manama at 1am on May 13. There were no fatalities, but three men were injured during the frantic escape. Thirty men were immediately displaced and lost their money, legal documents and personal belongings in the fire.
