Bahrain detains foreign vessel for damaging shipment

Manama : The Implementation Court has ordered for the detention of a foreign ship that damaged a sugar shipment worth $300,000.

The ship was assigned to transport the consignment to a Gulf state for a local exporting company, but receiving authorities refused to take it as it had a bad odour. The ship was sent back with the consignment to Bahrain.

A probe was carried out to identify the cause of the smell, and it blamed a consignment that the ship had on its deck prior to carrying the sugar.

The probe report held the ship crew responsible as they failed to clean the ship before loading the sugar shipment.

The company decided to sue the ship, demanding a compensation for the losses it incurred.

It’s worth noting that sea law gives those affected the right to detain ships if any losses are incurred as a result of their misconduct, provided a lawsuit is filed within eight days from the beginning of the detention period.
