World Robot Olympiad in Bahrain
Manama : The national-level competitions of the World Robot Olympiad will be held here today under the theme “Rap the Scrap: Robots for reducing, managing, and recycling waste.”
The event is being organised by AMA International School under the patronage of First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport and President of the Bahrain Athletics Association HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
A total of 210 students from 25 schools registered for the competitions as of yesterday. “About 25 schools are participating in the event and 70 teams will be competing against each other. Students of the age group 8 to 17 are participating in the competitions, which will be held in different age groups,” an organiser informed. “Each team will consist of three members. There are seven categories- Elementary school, Middle School, High school, Open elementary school, open Middle School, High school and WRO Football.”
“Each category has a specific challenge; elementary, middle and high school categories has to come up with robots that will be able to execute tasks relating to recycling. The football category is also interesting, the students build robots that will compete against each other with a ball. Just as in the case of the sport of traditional football, the robots will need to kick the ball into the net to score goals,” she explained. “The students use Lego brand of components to build the Robots. They have to build it and programme it. The challenges are getting more difficult every year, but they are smart kids, they can cope with it. This will help them develop their creativity and team work,” she added.
Winners of the competition will represent Bahrain in the international level com-petitions, which will be held in India in November. The students got a chance to practise at the venue in Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Sanabis yesterday.
