Bahrain stress importance of conserving indigenous plants

Manama : Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, the Secretary- General of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, yesterday stressed the need to conserve indigenous plants in the Kingdom.

“The basis of planting seeds is to ensure the sustainability of native trees and plants that are well known to Bahrain,” she said, while addressing the audience during a lecture held at Isa Cultural Centre.

The lecture, titled “Ways to collect and store seeds,” was presented by agricultural expert Yousef Al Mousawi from Kuwait, in the presence of a large number of farmers, hobbiyists, academics and owners of agricultural projects.

He introduced to them the importance of seeds methods of collection and storage, the mechanics used to help them grow and the importance of recycling pots.

Shaikha Maram is keen to organise such agricultural courses and lectures, which aims to correct agricultural practices. It is expected to reflect positively on lifestyle, environment, society and the development of agriculture in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The Secretary-General of the National Initiative thanked Yousef Al Mousawi, saying, “The opening prospects for cooperation with our brothers from neighbouring countries through the hosting of agricultural experts will contribute definitely to the development of this vital important sector and its sustainability in the region.”
