Smuggler’s appeal rejected

Manama

The High Criminal Appeals Court rejected a Pakistani national’s appeal against the six months imprisonment sentence for abetting to smuggle drugs to a prisoner.

A native is also engaged in the same case, but he didn't challenge the High Criminal Court's 6-month jail term against him.

The 36-year-old Bahraini national reportedly wanted to smuggle the drugs inside Jaw Prison upon the request of a prisoner in the facility. But his attempt was exposed following a tip-off to anti-narcotic officers.

An officer in plain clothes contacted accused, and expressed his desire in helping him smuggle. The duo agreed on BD800 for the service, and planned a meeting to conclude the deal.

But it was the Pakistani national who appeared at the scene instead of his co-accused. Anti-drug squads, however, nabbed the 36-year-old who was in Manama.

After inspecting his house, police seized a total cash of BD680 and 3750 Saudi riyals (BD375).

"An inmate in Jaw Prison pressed me to smuggle drugs for him, but I was reluctant. He guaranteed me that I wouldn't be caught and I agreed," the Bahraini accused told prosecutors.

"He guided me to the place where the drugs were hidden. I went and I took them, and eventually gave them to the Pakistani man," he added.

The High Criminal Court earlier fined the Bahraini accused BD500, and his accomplice BD100. The latter will be deported once he completes his jail time.
