Al Malki clinches gold in Bahrain
Manama :Bahrain Elite Swimming Team’s Omar Al Malki yesterday clinched the 18-30 years category gold medal as part of the 2016 Olympic Day festivities.
The festivities were organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), in cooperation with the Southern Governorate at the Bahrain Swimming Association premises at Khalifa Sports City in Isa Town.
The Bahrain national team skipper scored 1,732 points in total to top the competition, beating another prominent Bahraini swimmer Khalid Baba (1,454), who secured the silver.
Abdulla Abu Al Shabab (1,163), representing the Bahrain triathlon team took the bronze.
Yesterday’s action also featured 10 categories in the boys and girls sections. Oleg Rukhlevich (1,223) of Bahrain Elite Swimming Team also followed suit, winning the men’s 31 and above, with Michael Raymond (Bahrain Triathlon, 788) taking silver and Mohammed Al Dosiri (Bahrain Triathlon, 529) the bronze.
In the girls section, Fatema Al Mahmeed (1,001, Bahrain Elite Swimming Team) raced to victory in the 15-17 years category race ahead of teammate Swathi (204), who took the sliver.
In the 13-14 years category, Rataj Razi (783, Bahrain Swimming Team won gold, while teammates Adhya Rakesh (134) and Shreya Shaji (124), respectively took the silver and bronze medals.
Late on, Bahrain Swimming Association president Shaikh Mohammed bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and high ranking BOC representatives honoured the top three swimmers in each race.
This year’s Olympic Day got underway on May 14 with the Northern Governorate hosting the inaugural running races as well as other competitions and entertainment activities at Budaiya Coast Park. This was followed by the Capital Governorate last Tuesday in Tubli.
Olympic Day now visits Muharraq Governorate on Tuesday for the penultimate races, while the fifth and concluding races are scheduled for Friday at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.
