Shaikh Ali Salman will know his fate today

He was accused of promoting political change using forceful means

Manama

A much-awaited court ruling will be delivered today in the trial of General Secretary of Al Wefaq Islamic Society.

Shaikh Ali Salman is accused of promoting political change using illegal forceful means and threats, spreading hatred among a segment of society, insulting the interior ministry and encouraging non-compliance with the law.

He was charged based on several speeches he had publicly delivered. The Public Prosecution urged the High Criminal Court in the closing arguments to give him maximum punishment for such charges.

The Public Prosecution indicated the accused had already admitted the speeches were made by him.

"The accused claimed the country doesn't pay attention to its people, ignoring the amount of the development Bahrain has recorded. He aimed to topple the regime with force, violating the law, and insulting the security forces using colorful words packed in lies in order to move the feelings of the citizens," said the Public Prosecution during the hearing of the closing arguments.

"We don't want him to be punished for the intentions he is hiding, but we want a ruling penalises him for what he had said."

The Public Prosecution has also denied the case against him is politically-motivated.

"The abstention of the Ministry of Interior to sue him earlier doesn't mean this case is politically-driven. The case was made based on solid evidences, that are sufficient to put him on trial."
