6 months jail for stealing car registration plates

A thief who stole two car registration plates has been sentenced to 6 months in jail. He was earlier handed down 18 months behind bars for hijacking a car, on which he fixed the stolen registration numbers. He now serve a combined jail term of 24 months.

The incident occurred in Hamad Town in July last year. The native was on his way home when he saw a vehicle parked near a shop with its engine turned on. He seized the opportunity and hijacked it before removing its plates and exchanging them with stolen the ones.

Police circulated the registration numbers to bust any vehicle bearing them.

However, it wasn't police who spotted it. A person became suspicious when he saw a vehicle bearing two different registration plates. Hence, he reported it to police and later guided them to its location.

It was later discovered the accused also found a mobile phone in the car, which he sold for BD25. He was tried on grounds of robbery, and the Lower Criminal Court handed down him 18 months in prison.
