Missing pets cases rampant in Bahrain

ManamaThe incidents of missing or stolen pets in Bahrain are rampant, as one pet goes missing every 2.1 days, according to statistics provided by BSPCA volunteer and Missing Pets Social Media Coordinator, Peg Altemueller.

From December 1, 2015 to May 25, 2016 a total of 81 pets went missing. This includes 43 cats, 35 dogs and 3 birds. With the diligence of some pet owners, and the help of others on social media, 15 cats, 11 dogs and 1 bird were found. These statistics are based on only those that have been reported on social media.

“The majority of the missing are not neutered or micro-chipped,” said Peg Altemueller.

“There are people always ready to profit from the breeding and selling of pets, and often roaming pets are quickly picked up. It is up to the owners to better protect their pets by keeping their eyes on them at all times, tagging them with contact information, neutering them. So they cannot be bred, and micro-chipping so their pets can be identified,” she explained.

“It is up to us on social media and in the press, to make sure people are aware of the problem,” Peg Altemueller added.
