Bahrain slaughterhouse reopens

Manama : One of Bahrain's main slaughterhouses that was closed earlier this year, has reopened.

Authorities recently announced the reoperation of the Central Slaughterhouse in Sitra to ensure the availability of sufficient meat stocks during the Holy Month of Ramadan,

Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry said in a statement, “Following the directives of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministerial Committee for Construction and Infrastructure Head Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, the Ministry’s Agriculture and Marine Resources Undersecretary Shaikh Khalifa bin Isa Al Khalifa met with Bahrain Livestock Company (BLC)’s board to discuss the procedures for reopening the abattoir during Ramadan.”

“Both parties agreed on the temporary reoperation of the slaughterhouse in Ramadan to serve the needs of citizens and residents, as the demand for fresh meat increases during the Holy Month. The officials insisted that the all health and technical conditions should be met ahead of operation, which will be done under governmental veterinary supervision,” the statement read.

Shaikh Khalifa reiterated Agriculture and Marine Resources’ keenness on food and consumers’ safety, adding that the Veterinary Department of the Directorate will work in full swing during Ramadan to supervise the slaughtering processes.

As reported earlier, BLC announced the closure of the Central Slaughterhouse in Sitra earlier this year due to lack of demand on fresh meat and more on frozen ones.

The company stated last April, “The Board found that there is no commercial viability in continuing with operations at its Central Abattoir in Sitra. Thus, it was resolved on principal to discontinue the operation as soon as the existing inventory of Live Australian Sheep currently in the Sitra feedlot, were finished.”
