First train station to cost BD49,500

Manama: The designs of Bahrain’s first railway station will cost around BD49, 500, sources confirmed.

“Tenders for the project, which is part of the joint GCC railway, were awarded by Transportation and Telecommunication Ministry to German firm TransCare,” our sister newspaper Al Ayam reported.

The project is expected to operate in 2018. It will cross GCC countries beginning from Kuwait in the north, Dammam in Saudi Arabia and will pass through Bahrain and Qatar, before going through Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in the UAE. It stops in the Omani Capital Muscat. According to the GCC States General Secretariat, the cost of the project’s infrastructure is US$15.4 billion.

The works include establishing an additional 2,117-kilometer causeway between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The railway will include a passenger train with a speed of 220 km/h and a cargo train with the speed of 80-120 km/h.

It has been announced earlier that a joint GCC railway station will be established to enhance coordination between GCC members and facilitate the operation of the huge project.
