Smart CCTVs to monitor traffic flow starting today

Manama : Bahrain roads will be monitored by advanced CCTV cameras starting today. The new cameras will detect traffic violations such as over-speeding, not wearing seatbelts or using handheld mobile phones.

“Traffic General Director Shaikh Nasser bin Adbulrahman Al Khalifa has announced that the smart CCTVs will be activated beginning today. The move  aims to enhance traffic safety and it’s a part of the modernisation and development strategy of the Interior Ministry,” a statement issued yesterday by the Ministry said read. According to the Ministry, Shaikh Nasser said that “those smart devices have proven their efficiency during the experimental phase”.

“They monitor various violations, including speeding, wrong overtaking and crossing red signal, and driving on yellow boxes and emergency lanes. They will also monitor the use of handheld mobile phones while driving and not wearing seatbelts,” Shaikh Nasser explained. 

He added, “The department has conducted a comprehensive traffic awareness campaign to promote traffic safety and encourage drivers to avoid wrong traffic practices. Drivers could check their violations online by activating the E-Key on Bahrain e-Government portal.”
