Fugitive Kuwaiti MP given extra jail term

Manama: A wanted Kuwaiti MP in Bahrain has been slapped with additional jail terms by the Kuwaiti judicial authorities. Controversial Kuwaiti parliamentarian Abdulhameed Dashti was sentenced to 10 days of detention pending investigations of a lawsuit filed against him in Kuwaiti courts.

Quoting reliable sources in Kuwait’s courts, Kuwaiti daily Al Qabas reported that “Dashti was sentenced to 10 days detention in absentia by the Chief Prosecutor in the case filed against him by the Saudi Embassy in Kuwait for his abuses against the Kingdom.”

The journal added that “the case is expected to be referred to the criminal court and Dashti is predicted to be sentenced in absentia to imprisonment.”

As reported earlier, Dashti was sentenced in absentia to two years of imprisonment by a Bahraini court for illegal fundraising.

Moreover, an arrest warrant to capture Dashti has been circulated internationally through the Interpol by the Public Prosecution here.

The MP had repeatedly made hostile statements against Bahrain and even called for a military strike against Saudi Arabia.

His parliamentary immunity has been revoked by the Kuwaiti Parliament (National Assembly) last march.

The man reportedly escaped legal actions by travelling back-and-forth from Syria and Switzerland, where the authority of the Interpol is limited.

DT News reported earlier that he was issued a Syrian passport by the Syrian regime to help him evade the international arrest warrant.

A Bahraini MP also filed several cases against Dashti in Kuwaiti courts for his continuous insults and support of extremist and terrorist groups in Bahrain.
