Life sentence of 20-year-old man commuted in drug case
Manama: The Supreme Appeals Court reduced the life sentence issued against a Bangladeshi man, who was found guilty of smuggling marijuana. The 20-year-old was given 15 years in jail instead.
He was arrested at Bahrain International Airport after the illicit drugs were found stashed in slippers. He landed in a flight from Bangladesh.
The defendant’s slippers were seen bizarrely at the time of his arrival, prompting a Customs officer to send him for extensive inspection, court files stated. The seized marijuana weighs over one kilogram.
The defendant earlier said he wasn’t aware that the slippers had contained drugs. He said his cousin had given them to him two months ago.
