Iyengar Yoga session to be held today in Bahrain

Manama: As part of the International Day of Yoga 2016 celebrations in Bahrain, Iyengar Yoga instructor Ehasan Ashgar will conduct a yoga session today at Elite Seef Residence Hotel.

Ehasan said he dedicates the session to B.K.S. Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga and one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world. He is performing on behalf of his master Bandi Ramulu, Bahrain’s first yoga guru.

The session, which is supported by the Indian Embassy, will start with the lighting of the lamp at 8pm by Indian Ambassador Alok Kumar Sinha. Public is invited to attend with their mats and water bottle.

“Iyengar yoga focuses on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas,” explained Ehasan.

What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar Yoga is characterised by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment. Iyengar pioneered the use of “props” such as cushions, benches, blocks, straps and sand bags, which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully.

Props also allow elderly, injured, tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully “supported” methods requiring less muscular effort.

Iyengar teachers complete at least two years of rigorous training to obtain the introductory certificate.

They may complete subsequent intermediate levels and senior levels of certification, potentially entailing a decade or more of training.
