Al Wefaq Society case: Hearing put off to Sept.4

ManamaThe High Civil Court adjourned yesterday hearing the case of the disbandment of Al Wefaq Islamic Society and the liquidation of its assets into the State’s treasury until September 4 for review.

Though the case was earlier scheduled to be heard on October 6, the court had advanced the hearing date to June 23 as per the request of the Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments.

In the light of adjourning the case to another date, the Ministry issued a statement yesterday that it will submit a new request next Sunday to change the hearing’s date and bring it forward.

The High Administrative Court had ordered last week the suspension of the society and freezing of its assets on grounds of supporting terrorist groups.  The decision follows a case filed by Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa against the society for breaching the political societies law and supporting terrorist groups.

The Minister stressed that after following the society’s activities it was evident that it’s foundations had become a dangerous threat to the country. According to him, the society had systematically targeted breaching the constitution. “This prompted to remove it from its legitimacy. The accusations against the society include calling for foreign interventions in the country’s affairs, doubting the legislative authority and prejudicing the judiciary as well as operating within the framework of external religious reference,” he added.
