ManamaGulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) has honoured the winners and participants of its Environmental Research Programme for 2015-16.

The Istiqlal Girls Secondary School won first place, with students Raghad Jamil Al-Najjar and Iman Hamid Khalifa presenting their project on Fire and Water-resistant Timber.

The Shaikh Isa bin Ali Secondary Boys School won second place with students Mohammed Mansour Ali Ashour and Hassan Abdul Wahid Hassan presenting their project titled Electric Power Generation by Wind Movement Using Recycled Materials.

The third place went to the Saar Secondary School for Girls whose student, Kawthar Tawfiq Rabeae, presented her project on The Experience of Innovative Cellulose Material to Absorb Petroleum Oils.

General Manager Manufacturing Fadhel Al Ansari honoured the students on behalf of GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery.

In a statement on the occasion, Dr. Jawahery expressed his happiness at the success of the project and said the unique programme had achieved its goals of encouraging students in conducting scientific research in the field of the environment and had contributed towards innovative ideas on environmental awareness and generating an interest in environmental issues.

Dr. Jawahery praised cooperation with the Ministry of Education, under the leadership of the Minister Dr. Majid Al Nuaimi, who, he said, had spared no effort in providing all encouragement for the programme to succeed.

He also applauded the cooperation between the Ministry’s working group and GPIC’s Environment Committee, which contributed to the programme’s success and sustainability over the years.

He added that the company’s efforts would continue through the activities of a variety of programmes that support the younger generation and encourage them towards science.

He said such projects are part of the company targets towards achieving sustainable development, which will leave a positive impact on society and individuals. Dr. Jawahery thanked all participating schools, represented by the managers, supervisors and students and wished the students every success.

The programme began during the 2004-2005 academic year, when the Education Ministry’s Student Services Department co-ordinated with the company’s Environment Committee.
