Two men’s jail term reduced in doctor assault case
Manama : Two men convicted of attacking a doctor had their jail terms reduced to three years on appeal. They were earlier sentenced to five years behind bars each. A third man was also implicated in the same case and his six-month imprisonment was confirmed after his appeal was rejected.
According to court files, the victim was attacked violently by the trio following a comment he had made on smartphones app Instagram, which they deemed defamatory. One of the victim’s female colleagues, who was on a visit to him, said she was shocked to see the defendants trying to pull him out of his car. “One of them snatched a mug from the doctor’s hand, and banged it on his head,” she told prosecutors earlier.
The assault caused 21pc visual impairment to the victim’s left eye. The defendants have been convicted of causing physical harm to the doctor as well as insulting him verbally during the assault.
