Man gets jail in drug case

ManamaAn Iranian man accused of using force against policemen and consuming drugs has been sentenced to three years.

According to court files, the 45-year-old Bahrain-born Iranian man was jobless and high on drugs. He was arrested from Salmaniya on June 6.

The incident leading to the arrest occurred when the defendant attracted the suspicion of police officers by dropping a cigarette packet, which he was picking up, upon realizing that he was being watched. “When he noticed us approaching him, he dropped the thing and tried to move away. So we stopped to inspect the object,” a police officer said adding that it turned out that the cigarette contained heroine.

“We immediately chased him, but he attempted to flee. He also resisted the arrest, before we managed to handcuff him,” the officer added.

Two police officers were injured in the incident. Detectives later raided his apartment and seized drugs. The defendant was accused of possessing drugs with the intention to consume.
