Dashti’s threats against Bahrain are irresponsible: MP Jamal Buhassan

ManamaThe hostile statements made by a fugitive Kuwaiti MP against Bahrain recently on social media have drawn the ire of Bahraini lawmaker Jamal Buhassan. Kuwaiti MP Abdulhamid Dashti, who has been sentenced to a two-year jail term in Bahrain, had threatened the Kingdom and its citizens on his Twitter page.

He also targeted Buhassan, as the Bahraini MP had called for death penalty against a religious figure, whose citizenship was stripped off recently owing to his allegiance to Iran, harming national unity and security. Dashti described Buhassan on Twitter as a “criminal parliamentarian.”

Taking a dig at Dashti on Friday, Buhassan said, “We’re deeply sorry that this fugitive is still a member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly (Parliament),” adding that “Dashti’s recent threats and aggressive remarks are empty, ignorant and irresponsible.”

The Kuwaiti authorities revoked Dashti’s parliamentary immunity last March.

The Bahraini MP said, “Dashti is only a follower of the Velayat-e faqih (undisputed rule of clerics, launched by the Iranian Revolution leader). His words and the threats of his Iranian masters will not intimidate us or our leaders.”

Dashti physically assaulted Buhassan during an international meeting in Geneva last September. He was then expelled from the meeting following Buhassan’s complaint.

It’s noteworthy that Buhassan had filed a case against Dashti in the Kuwaiti courts for the latter’s constant hostility to Bahrain, its government and people.

Dashti, who’s now residing in Geneva, had repeatedly insulted Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Dashti’s hostility towards Bahrain has noticeably increased following the judiciary and administrative decisions taken by the Kingdom against violating organisations and societies last week.

Dashti is wanted in Bahrain after he was charged with illegal fundraising by a Bahraini court in December 2015. The Public Prosecution issued an arrest warrant against him last March and the warrant was circulated internationally through the Interpol.

It has been reported that Dashti hasn’t returned to Kuwait since then, while travelling back-and-forth between Switzerland and Syria, where he’s provided protection by Al Assad’s regime.
