SMC gets cancer detecting device

Manama : The Rotary Club of Manama (RCM), the Bahrain Cancer Society (BCS) together with Yousif & Aysha Almoayyed Charity Committee, has answered an urgent call for high-tech aid to treat children with cancer.

Rotary Club of Manama and Bahrain Cancer Society raised BD30,000 each. Yousif & Aysha Almoayyed Charity contributed BD20,000. The amount was used to purchase a state-of-the-art BD Flow Cytometer machine.

A special children’s oncology unit at the Salmaniya Medical Complex hospital was set up by the generous contribution of the Kanoo family, but it lacked an important equipment to bring treatment up to the very highest level.

The equipment named BD Flow Cytometer provides a laser based biophysical technology for cell counting and sorting, needed in the early detection of cancer cells.

President of the Bahrain Cancer Society Dr Abdul Rahman Ebrahim Fakhro explained that the device constitutes a leap in the diagnosis of leukaemia and the follow-up of treatment for adult and children patients with cancer.

The BSC confirmed that the sum was collected with the help of sixth annual bazaar and a fundraising campaign.

Cancer cases reported in Bahrain are increasing annually, according to the official statistics and are now running at an average of 426 cases a year. However, the number of children with leukaemia is increasing rapidly.
