Another feather in the cap for RBH
Manama : Royal Bahrain Hospital (RBH) has achieved yet another milestone and a first in Bahrain by receiving the prestigious accreditation from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) for its metabolic and bariatric surgery programme.
Bariatric surgery is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure done for highly obese patients to reduce weight in a systematic way. It gives remarkable results; with people losing anywhere from 25 to 50 per cent of their original weight. It has also shown to dramatically improve or cure Type 2 diabetes in some obese patients including a group that does not strictly meet the criteria of morbid obesity. Metabolic surgery can normalise blood glucose levels and allow discontinuation of insulin therapy.
The hospital added one more feather in its cap with its Chief Medical Officer and Consultant – General Surgeon, Dr. Stephen Angamuthu was recognised as a Surgeon of Excellence by SRC in the aforesaid surgical field.
With these achievements, RBH has further strengthened its footprint in the areas of providing high quality healthcare, patient care and safety and excellence of surgeons in their respective specialties.
Reflecting on the accomplishments, Dr. Sheriff Sahadulla, Executive Director at RBH said, “We have always prided ourselves in maintaining the highest level of quality standards. RBH is the first medical facility in Bahrain to be accredited by the US-based Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. As metabolic diseases are on the rise in Bahrain, we want to be able to provide a safe environment with excellent clinical outcomes for our patients who require bariatric surgery. I congratulate the entire team led by Dr. Stephen on this accomplishment.”
In today’s times, obesity has given rise to a number of chronic health conditions (also called co-morbidities), such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes (type II), pulmonary disease, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, cancer (breast and colon) among many others.
Highlighting the benefits of bariatric surgery, Dr. Stephen Angamuthu says, “This surgery is the perfect option for those who want a full and permanent solution in case traditional weight-loss methods have failed. Millions of people worldwide have undergone bariatric surgery successfully. As a matter of fact, in most cases, the risks that arise from remaining obese are greater than those of undergoing surgery.’
According to Dr. Stephen, bariatric surgery should be ultimately viewed as an effective option to prevent obesity-related diseases and have an extended lifespan, increased energy and self-esteem and weight loss.
