New traffic cameras keep tab on speeders

Manama : The new traffic monitoring cameras installed at Bahrain roads have contributed in reining in speeders.

In less than one month of activating the new Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, the General Directorate of Traffic confirmed that it had referred 66 drivers to the Public Prosecution for speeding.

In a statement issued by the directorate yesterday, it was also mentioned that 17 other violators were referred to the Traffic Violations Section for legal action.

“ANPR cameras have been spotting wrong practices and traffic violations, including a reckless driver whose speed exceeded 200Km/hour on Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway on Tuesday,” the statement read.

The department has started legal steps against all violations in accordance with the law, and took measures that prevent the repeat of offenses.

“The directorate calls upon drivers to avoid legal accountability by strictly following traffic rules to protect lives and property,” the directorate added.

The cameras were activated on June 11. Traffic General Director Shaikh Nasser bin Adbulrahman Al Khalifa commented then that “those smart devices have proven their efficiency during the experimental phase.”
