Garbage crisis curbed by 90 pc

Manama : Bahrain's recent waste accumulation crisis has been curbed by 90 per cent, councillors stated yesterday.

This came following a meeting between Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf, Southern Area Municipal Council Chairman Ahmed Al Ansari and Northern Area Municipal Council Chairman Khalifa Buhumood.

“We will now concentrate on sweeping the streets and removing the waste strewn all over the area,” said Al Ansari.

“This meeting comes as a follow-up of the new cleaning company’s work to evaluate its method of containing the waste and stand on its latest mechanisms and plans.

“Previously, the priority was to remove the garbage that was accumulated in the area. We have now restored the situation by 90pc. Our next challenge is to swiftly clean the streets in the upcoming days, to maintain hygiene.”

Al Ansari called upon people to cooperate with authorities to maintain a clean environment, adding that the council was following up with the cleaning company to increase the number of waste bins in the area.

Buhumood described the waste disposal in both governorates as “reassuring”. “We can’t really say that the issue is completely terminated at this point because we have a comprehensive strategy to clean the area.”

Directors and officials in both governorates’ municipalities also attended the meeting.
