‘Do it’ campaign set to be launched in Bahrain
Manama : Al Riwaq Art Space is partnering with Sharjah Art Foundation to introduce the ‘Do it’ campaign in Bahrain.
First launched in 1993 by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Do it is the longest-running and furthest spanning art project of its kind. The campaign will be launched at Malja Bahrain at Amwaj Islands tomorrow at 6.30pm.
Al Riwaq Art Space explained, “The concept is simple; follow instructions written under the guidance of international artists to realise their artwork. First, the book of instructions was created as an art exhibition in itself, with a wide circulation.
“Now it has made it all the way to the Gulf region, it makes for a different kind of exhibition, where art becomes a game and everyone has the rules. In 2016, Sharjah Art Foundation created Do it, a project which represents emerging and acclaimed artists from all over the MENA region, whose work reflect its diversity and flavour in their various interpretations.”
It also stated that more than 70 artists from across the region have written instructions that anyone can use to make a new work of art. The instructions reveal a range of artistic concerns and positions, some addressing social and political issues, others revealing an interest in the ways we communicate and understand the world around us.
Beyond the walls of the exhibition space, ‘Do it’ would be activated across homes, schools and community hubs in Bahrain, where selected instructions will be shared through social media platforms.
“This is an exhibition where the presence of the artists is not found in the installations but in the instructions; the artworks will be made by you. Join us to be part of this momentous event, making for fun exercises in differences and repetitions of the same instructions, inventing new rules to the game as you go along. We are excited to be the proud organisers of Do it in Bahrain, launching the first exhibition at Malja Bahrain,” it stated.
