Advanced Orthopedic Care at RBH

ManamaKnee injuries have always been a very common issue. Athletes, sportspersons and inactive elderly share some worries in common especially with regular knee injuries.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury is the most common among them. ACL is one of the four ligaments that connect the bones in the knee. The injury occurs when the ACL is overstretched or torn. Approximately half of ACL injuries will cause damage to other areas of the knee, including the meniscus, a wedge-shaped piece of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber for the knee joints. Surgical treatment is usually advised to repair these injuries.

Dr. Anastasia Athanasiou, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon- at RBH Medical Centre says, “Knee injuries are very common orthopedic injuries, particularly among professional athletes and the elderly. They are usually caused by twisting or turning too quickly when the foot is planted and the knee is bent. These injuries often cause the knee to be in pain, lock, click and swell. Most patients are treated by physiotherapy while others having severe injuries undergo surgeries as outpatients. They usually go home a few hours after the surgery.”

At RBH Medical Center-Riffa, Dr. Anastasia’s expertise include the diagnosis, treatment and management of a wide range of orthopedic cases – sports injuries, shoulder conditions, knee & hip joint replacement, arthritis and children’s orthopedic problems.
