Bahrain students develop robots
Manama : Robots that can automatically coordinate to perform certain tasks at the same time have been developed by a team of students from the University of Bahrain (UoB) Electronic Engineering department.
The project designed by the four-member Bahraini team also won first place in UoB’s Engineering College graduation projects’ competition and exhibition held under the patronage of UoB President Dr Riyadh Hamza. Around 89 projects were presented in the competition.
According to the team, the project could be utilised in remote areas that are difficult for humans to reach. A prototype was used for controlling traffic, by operating two traffic lights in coordination with each other.
The project consists of sensors, cameras, control panel and an automatic arm.
Team member Ali Aqeel said, “The project consists of two robots positioned at two different points to perform certain tasks at the same time. We have tested the robots by placing them at traffic signals on two roads (a highway and a side road). They would coordinate by remotely exchanging data. For example, if traffic on the highway is standstill, the robot placed there would send information to the other one, which will stop the flow of traffic on the side road.”
Other team members include Ahmed Makki, Sayed Ayman and Ahmed Abdulrasool.
