TRA launches awareness campaign
Manama : Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched “Your SIM Your Responsibility” campaign recently in a move to raise awareness on risks of mobile SIM-card misuse and the importance of having people protect themselves.
“It can’t be emphasised more strongly; people need to register their SIM cards. They need to know how many SIM cards are in their name and who is using it,” says Taiba Al Binali, TRA’s Acting Director of Consumer Affairs and Media.
“The legal and financial risks you put yourself in by not taking these precautions are serious, and you can be held accountable for them. Keep a close eye on the campaign to learn more about how to stay safe from SIM related fraud,” she added.
Consumers are asked to ensure that SIM cards, without their knowledge, are not registered in their name with the licensed mobile operators, in addition to not sharing their SIMs with other people to avoid being held accountable.
The campaign will also encourage residents and visitors to cancel any SIM-cards registered in their names in case they leave the country permanently to avoid misuse such as identity theft, fraud, or avoidable financial obligations.
The campaign follows a regulation for SIM-card registration, which was issued during the end of last year as a step to protect consumer interests.
