Soaring heat admits 41 in SMC
Manama : It seems summer has started to take its toll on people’s health. About 41 cases of sunstroke and heat stress reported at the Accident and Emergency Department in the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) in July alone show the intensity of rising temperatures in the country.
According to the department, only five and 10 such cases were reported in May and June respectively. “But there is a dramatic increase of patients, who were affected by the scorching heat in July.”
Some cases were related to heat shock and three cases were of sunstroke, stress and other health problems. “All the cases were due to people’s exposure to sunlight and it has adversely affected their health, skin and eyes in particular,” the hospital department explained.
Meanwhile, the experts said that children and elderly people with chronic diseases are the most vulnerable to health problems during summer, especially from the poor use of swimming pools and getting food poisoned.
“They should avoid direct exposure to the sun. Besides, people must consult with health specialists immediately after any occurrence of health problem,” they added.
