Court rejects appeal in firebombing case
Manama : The Supreme Appeals Court has turned down the appeals of three defendants convicted in connection with an arson case. Earlier, the trio had appealed against the five-year jail sentence handed down to them by a Bahrain court.
According to the case, the accused set a Hamad Town power plant on fire with firebombs on May 15, 2013 during a riot in the area. They also joined others in burned tyres on the road.
During the investigations, only three people were identified while the whereabouts of other rioters are unknown.
The first defendant, aged 22, admitted to his involvement in the incident. He revealed to the prosecutors that he had participated in similar crimes earlier. “We went to the area with other masked men. We opened the plant door before pouring the gasoline. Then we threw firebombs at the plant,” he said in his statement.
His co-defendant, also aged 22, pointed out that he had agreed with his accomplices to make firebombs to burn power plants.
The defendants were found guilty of arson, possessing firebombs and taking part in an illegal gathering.
