Timely call help Zinj residents escape fire
Manama : Sixteen residents, including two children, had a miraculous escape yesterday as a sudden fire raged through their building, thanks to the timely alert by a neighbour.
Initial investigation reveals gas leak as the cause of the fire in the three-story apartment, which also houses a cold store.
At first, the occupants were not aware of the mishap even as the blaze send smoke billowing over the building.
Fortunately, a nearby resident spotted the fire and quickly warned the cold store worker – also a tenant of the building – by phone.
The alarmed worker rushed out and realised that the building was on fire.
He then swiftly alerted his roommates and the other tenants who helped them evacuate safely.
Saved by the ‘bell’
“That phone call saved them! For some strange reason nobody within the building were aware of the fire. If we had not received the call, it would have been too late,” the cold store worker told DT News.
“As soon as I saw the fire, my first instinct was to get everyone out of the building. First I alerted my roommate and then everyone else.
“Fortunately, everyone was able to escape without any injuries. Later, we called in the Civil Defence for assistance,” he added.
Afsal, a tenant who was inside the building at the time of the fire, also confirmed that he had no idea about the fire until he was alerted by his roommate.
“I was eating at the time, I did not know that the building was on fire. My roommate, who was outside at the time, alerted me.” The rescue team was dispatched to the spot soon to put out the fire.
