Public opinion on stray dog menace invited

Manama : While the streets of residential localities are quickly becoming unsafe for commuters with stray dog attacks, councillors here have come up with an ingenious idea to mobilise public opinion against the menace.

They are now calling for launching an electronic platform where people could freely express their opinion and solutions to solve the growing threat.

According to Northern Area Municipal Council members, such a system will help people to join hands with the municipal councils and speed up efforts to solve the stray dogs’ menace.

“We need innovative solutions to end this crisis,” the councillors opined.

While demanding that the concerned authorities take swift action, the councillors also decided to form a special committee to follow up the issue. Chaired by Northern Area Municipal Council Chairman Mohammed Buhamood, the meeting was attended by councillors from all four governorates.

The meeting gave strict instructions to the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry to shake off laxity and engage in ways to solve the issue.

“This issue of stray dogs has become a big concern for the citizens and residents. They are being victimised by dogs even in residential areas,” councillors added.

DT News reported yesterday about an incident in Sitra where a girl was badly attacked by a pack of dogs. Following the incident, MP Ali Al Ateesh urged the authorities to find a solution or face the Parliament.

According to him, it is the responsibility of the municipalities and municipal councils to act.

It is worth mentioning that several groups of volunteers are simultaneously trying to the solve the issue by finding adopters and shelters.

They are also reportedly following a technique known as ‘Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return’ to curb uncontrolled reproduction of the animals.
