Woman jailed for defaming Bahrain cop

ManamaThe High Criminal Appeals Court has sentenced a woman to three years imprisonment with a fine of BD20 for defaming a police officer.

The defendant, who is in her 50s, insulted the cop when she was in the police station with her wheelchair-bound elderly mother.

It is reported that the defendant had requested a security officer in the station reception to help her push the wheelchair of her mother as she was having problems with her left hand.

However, the employee declined her request and told her that security officers are prohibited from pushing the chair, stating that she has to do it herself.

The woman, who was vexed by his response, later remarked: “If only this donkey allows me to enter the station with the car.”

When the latter was informed about the woman’s insult, he decided to take her to court.

The woman informed the court that she was diabetic and have back problems.

“I underwent a surgery in my left hand, thus I couldn’t push the chair. I was so frustrated at the moment and lost my temper,” the woman said.

Though she and her mother had apologised to the police officer, he insisted on filing a case against the defendant.
