Drug smuggling using pillow foiled

ManamaA man, who attempted to sneak around drugs into the Kingdom inside a pillow, was caught red-handed at Bahrain International Airport (BIA) recently.

The crime came to light after customs officials at BIA suspected the Bangladeshi national of hiding contraband. They apparently noticed the pillow he was carrying along with his two bags.

Just as he was about to leave the airport, the officers stopped him and ordered him to be searched. They recovered drugs weighing 810 gram stashed inside the pillow.

The man appeared before a remand judge yesterday, where he pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking.

During interrogation by the Public Prosecution, the defendant claimed that he was not aware of the drugs stashed in the pillow. He added that someone in his homeland gave it to him before travelling to the Kingdom.

“My friend requested me to deliver the pillow to his brother who is working in Bahrain. I didn’t know that drugs were hidden inside it,” he claimed.

The defendant was charged with attempting to smuggle drugs.
