Couple’s remand extended in drug smuggling case

ManamaThe remand of a Bahraini couple accused of aiding a drug smuggling network has been renewed by another 15 days.

According to court files, the duo were arrested at the Bahrain International Airport while trying to smuggle 14,260 grams of shabu as well as 12 narcotic pills. They were under surveillance following a tip-off.

The woman had told prosecutors that the drugs were given to them by a Bahraini man in Malaysia, who had requested them to deliver it in Bahrain. However, her lawyer told judges in the second hearing that she wasn’t aware that her husband was smuggling drugs.

So the lawyer pleaded the court to grant her bail. But the court denied the request and ordered to remand them in police custody.
