Striving to improve situation of labourers: Indian envoy

Manama  : The Indian Embassy and the Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF) are doing their best to improve the living conditions of Indian labourers, who are living in unsafe buildings, Indian Ambassador Alok Kumar Sinha said yesterday.

Speaking to reporters  after the Indian Embassy Open House on the Embassy premises in Adliya, Sinha said “the embassy is collaborating with ICRF to improve the situation of low-paid workers. Many workers, including Indians, who are living in labour camps, have been victims of fire accidents in recent years.”

“ICRF is actively pursuing this issue. They are spreading awareness on the issue. They organise free medical camps and distribute water and other provisions for the workers, who have been also told to be careful about their residence,” he said. “Spreading awareness and extending help for them to improve their situation is an ongoing exercise.”

The ambassador informed that during the Open House in recent months most cases have been resolved.

He said the creation of the database of Indian citizens in Bahrain is in full swing.

Commenting on the database, Sinha remarked, “In situations where a family in India is unable to contact their relatives here, the database will help us reach the citizens here.”

Indian nationals can register to the database by visiting the embassy website eoi.gov.in/bahrain.
