10,000 new students to enrol this year

Manama : The academic year 2016/2017 will see enrolment of more than 140,000 students, including over 10,000 new students across 208 schools, said Education Minister Dr. Majid Al Nuaimi. 

The new academic year was launched yesterday, with the administrative members returning to the schools. As for students, their classes will begin directly after the Eid al-Adha holiday.

The ministry has completed the necessary maintenance works of schools and completed printing more than 2.5 million study books and teacher guides, added Dr. Al Nuaimi.

Annual maintenance

The minister said maintenance work for schools has been completed during the summer holidays in collaboration with the Ministry of Works. A number of schools received partial maintenance while others received full maintenance according to the needs of each school within the limits of available resources.

Strengthening human resources

The ministry has completed teacher recruitment procedures by hiring graduates of Bahrain Teachers College. There are over 18,000 teachers and administrators at the administrative and educational bodies.

Expansion in the provision of academic seats

The minister stressed that the new academic year will see the opening a number of new schools including the Wadi Al Sail Elementary School for Boys. The Works Ministry is expected to complete construction of more schools including Busaiteen Intermediate School for Girls, Hunainiya Boys Secondary School and Isa Town Primary School for Boys.

Development projects

The minister pointed out that the new academic year will see the addition of 12 new intermediate schools under the digital empowerment project. A total of 17 schools have applied for the project. 

A large number of textbooks are provided electronically on the educational portal in the ministry’s website.

The minister said that “virtual laboratory” project will be expanded to include intermediate schools. The Citizenship and Human Rights enhancement project will be expanded to 10 additional intermediate schools, which raises the number of schools to 14. He said the new academic year will have the French language teaching project expanded to three additional schools, increasing the number of schools to 21.

 

New classes for students with disabilities

The 2016/2017 academic year will feature five new classes for students with disabilities, which raises the number of classes to 75.

Two new classes will be built for autistic students in Busaiteen Primary Girls School and Khwarizmi Primary Boys School, increasing the number of such classes in public schools to 12.

Three new classes for down syndrome students will be added to Busaiteen Primary Boys School, Al Ala’a Al Hadhrami Primary Boys School and Wadi Al Sail Primary Boys School, raising the number of down syndrome classes to 63.

 

Providing free transportation

The Education Ministry is providing free transport daily to more than 37,000 students in all governorates. This is done by allocating 650 buses, in addition to 12 buses for students with disabilities.

Special education and kindergarten

The new academic year will feature one new private school and three kindergartens. He pointed out that schools will teach important nationalistic subjects including Arabic language, Islamic Studies, Citizenship, Bahrain’s History and Geography.

Developing higher education institutions

The minister said the new academic year will see the completion of several higher education institutions including the British College of Bahrain, which will be in collaboration with Salford University of Manchester. 

Bahrain Training Institute

The Bahrain Training Institute will include three programmes for high school graduates that fit the labour market requirements this year. The programme includes National Diploma in Medical Equipment Maintenance, in Islamic Banking and Finance, and in Agriculture Development. As for the private and public sector employees, there will be five new programmes: National Diploma in Office Management, in Human Resources Management, in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management, in Supervisory Management and in Warehouse Management.
