BD45 million project to boost Bahrain local tourism

ManamaPrime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has endorsed the launch of a mega development project in Muharraq aimed to boost the local tourism infrastructure.

The BD45 million project links Muharraq’s historical souq (traditional market) with a modern waterfront through a pedestrian bridge.

The project features a hotel that overlooks the waterfront and a multi-storey parking lot that can accommodate 500 cars.

A souq, which is an extension to the old Muharraq Market, will be built on the current location of the Muharraq Post. It also contains a boat harbour, a walkway and an space for restaurants and cafes.

The project is in line with the directives issued by the Prime Minister during his field visit to Muharraq and its coastal area.

The endorsement came as Prince Khalifa chaired a work meeting here yesterday.

During the meeting, the Premier was briefed by Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa about the project’s technical details.

The Prime Minister underlined the government’s keenness on implementing vital development projects that provide tourism, recreational and commercial alternatives for the citizens.

Prince Khalifa added that leadership is also keen to develop tourism in regions across the Kingdom, especially Muharraq, given its rich historical heritage. The Prime Minister directed to put the development project out to tender as early as possible.

Separately, Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) President Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa hailed the plan which, she said, will bolster sustainable trade and cultural tourism infrastructure in Muharraq.
