Nabeel Rajab charged with spreading rumours
Manama : Detained activist Nabeel Rajab has been pressed with fresh charges in connection spreading false news and tendentious rumours that undermine Bahrain’s prestige and stature, DT News has learnt.
Rajab reportedly sent a letter to the New York Times from his prison cell that contained false information. The contents of the letter was eventually published in the foreign media outlet.
Yesterday, the High Criminal Court adjourned hearing this case until October 6 to announce the verdict.
When interrogated, Rajab dismissed the accusation against him, stating that it was impossible to conduct an interview with the newspaper while he is in detention.
The 51-year-old also denied having any connection with the newspaper or the article attributed to him, adding that the media outlet, which used his name, should bear the legal responsibility.
Rajab has been remanded in police custody over accusations of spreading false news and insulting a sister country.
He has been nabbed over publishing tweets containing untrue news on the ongoing military operation in Yemen, which is taking place in support of the legitimate government.
The defendant published remarks termed offensive against the Ministry of Interior. According to the indictment list, he alleged that the ministry is torturing prisoners, humiliating them, denying them education and degrading their dignity.
He also depicted the measures taken by the security forces during the Jaw Prison riots as torture.
