No shortage of meat during Eid Al Adha
Manama : Bahrain has imported a total of 35,000 livestock in order to meet the demand and meat supply during Eid Al Adha.
The authorities have taken steps to import adequate number of cattle heads in line with the anticipating increase in demand during the Feast of the Sacrifice, according to officials.
“The demand for the meat supply has increased this year as compared to last year where Bahrain imported only 23,000 livestock,” Ebrahim Yousif Ahmed, Control and Animal Health Director at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, said.
“Bahrain has increased the supply of livestock this year because there is more demand on the occasion of Eid Al Adha due to sacrifice and consumption. This number heads of livestock will also meet Bahrain market’s daily supply for meat which is 20 to 25 tonnes,” he said.
“Around 60 to 70 per cent of these heads of livestock will go to the slaughterhouse in Hamala and two others temporarily opened to provide enough space for slaughtering to private companies,” the official explained. “Among this stock is 240 cattle heads and the rest are all sheep.”
“The countries from which we have received the livestock is Sudan, Jordan and GCC countries like Oman and UAE,” Yousif Ahmed added.
To a query, he said it was the responsibility of the ministry to ensure the supply of a healthy livestock for consumption.
