PM’s kindness reaches Indian tribal

New DelhiDana Majhi, an Indian tribal from Odisha State, who was in the news recently for walking 10km carrying wife’s body on his shoulder, collected a cheque of BD5,000 from officials of the embassy of Bahrain in Delhi yesterday.

The amount was a gift from Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, who had been moved by the sight of Majhi, trying to carry his dead wife back home after she died at the district hospital in Odisha.

After reading about his plight in a local newspaper, Akhbaar Al Khaleej, Prince Khalifa was so moved that “he could not just stand by and do nothing about such suffering.” Prince Khalifa then contacted the Indian embassy in Bahrain and offered to make a donation.

Majhi told mediapersons, at a press conference arranged by his well-wishers, that he would deposit the money in the bank for his three daughters to use someday.

On August 24, Majhi lost his wife - his first wife had also died giving birth to his daughter- to tuberculosis. Majhi reportedly decided to walk the entire 64km stretch from a hospital in Kalahandi to his village, after he was denied a hearse to carry his wife’s dead body.

Majhi was accompanied by one of his sobbing daughters during his long walk while carrying his wife’s body. His 12-year old daughter accompanied him till some local reporters spotted the duo and arranged for an ambulance for the remaining 50 km of the journey.
