Court to hear appeal on terrorist link case

Manama : The Supreme Appeals Court will hear the appeals of 57 men, convicted of forming a terrorist group with links to Iran and Iraq, on October 27.

The court will also announce its ruling on all the defendants, who had received heavy jail terms. They were also stripped of their Bahraini nationality.

Sixty-one men had undergone trial in this case, out of which four were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The prosecutors had filed criminal charges against the defendants for forming a terrorist group in the Kingdom with links to hard-liners affiliated to Al Shirazi Movement.

Five of the convicted men were slapped with life-time-in-prison sentences, while 22 defendants were given 15 years imprisonment.

The other convicts were handed 10-year jail sentences. They were all fined BD500, except for one who received BD1,000 fine.

Topping the list of the convicts is notorious prisoner Redha Al Ghasra who is serving over 150 years behind the bars after being convicted in a set of terrorism-related
cases.
