‘Vitamin D vital for infants’ bones’

Manama : Lack of vitamin D in infants leads to reduction of strengthening and hardening of bones and teeth according to nutritionist Dr. Zuhair Al Dalal. He stressed the importance of  vitamin D in  the Human body as important micronutrients, which promote the intake of calcium in the body.

Dr. Zuhair Al Dalal was speaking during his lecture titled ‘The Role of Vitamin D in the Public Health,” organised by Abdul Rahman Cultural Centre yesterday.

“If this shortage continues during the growth phase, bones would not have adequate amount of vitamin D and calcium to carry this weight, which weakens the rib cage, spine, and pelvis, which are all symptoms of Rickets,” he said.

He added that women are also prone to lack of vitamin D, which causes osteoporosis.

According to Dr. Al Dalal, it has been noted that the largest number of people with vitamin D deficiency was found in the Northern and central industrial region because of the lack of availability to sunlight.
