Winter is coming, beware of cyclists!

ManamaWith the winter approaching, bicycle enthusiasts across the Island would be eager to take advantage of the climate.

However, the authorities have urged cyclists to obey traffic rules and pay extra attention in the backdrop of increasing deaths caused by bicycle-related accidents.

Speaking to DT News, Southern Area Municipal Council Chairman Ahmed Al Ansari warned of the danger when teenagers perform stunts on busy roads that eventually lead to mishaps.

“Teenagers riding bicycles and bikes are a common scene on roads during winter. However, we urge cyclists to be cautious on busy roads. Drivers are also equally responsible for the safety of cyclists,” he said.

“We strongly condemn the way teenagers behave on busy roads on the bicycles. If they are performing the stunts on a particular location, we will track them down and provide necessary awareness,” the official added.

At least eight people were killed in bicycle-related accidents so far this year, according to reports. However, other reports also suggest that many cyclist casualties are not reported to the police, especially in cases where the cyclist is only lightly injured. The figures also exclude cycling accidents that occur off the road.

Some people are of the opinion that cyclists are also motorists and there should be a mutual understanding when sharing the road.

There is also a trend exist wherein the number of children cycling in parks is drastically decreasing. Experts say that it is because of the lack of awareness from the side of parents, resulting in the restriction of the children’s freedom.

Al Ansari explained several measures the authorities could follow to prevent such mishaps from recurring including construction of speed humps, allocating a separate lane for cyclists as well as creating crossing points.

“According to me, parents have to be given awareness first and foremost, because they have a vital role in moulding their children’s behaviour. We are planning to do awareness campaign for both parents and the teenagers, especially those who are in elementary school,” he explained.

“It is also recommended that drivers be cautious and give the children a signal about their approach on roads, either by blowing the horn or flashing headlights during night,” the chairman suggested.

Cycling needs to be promoted – it is green, healthy, and fun. But there are just some rules to follow, he added.
