New Bahraini notes ‘unacceptable’ in machines

Manama : New BD10 and BD20 currency notes are apparently not being accepted in any Cash Deposit Machines (CDM) in Bahrain.

Bahrain banks are currently in the process of notifying their customers of this since they are all waiting for new software to be installed in machines that are able to read the new notes launched by the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) recently.

The CDM is a self-service terminal that lets customers make deposits and payment transactions by cash. All successful transactions are immediately credited and customers will be issued an advice slip confirming the transaction.

However the new notes will be accepted at the bank’s teller counter at various branches.

“All banks in Bahrain do not (currently) accept the new notes that are deposited through CDMs,” said a senior staff at a top Bahrain bank.

“However the notes can be deposited at the teller counter at any branch.

“The banks are all waiting for new software that will allow the new notes to be accepted by the CDMs.

“Banks are in the process of sending SMS to their customers informing them of this.”

The official confirmed that this was only a temporary arrangement that would be sorted out soon.

Another source also confirmed to NOB the same.

“The machines have been programmed to accept the old Bahraini notes. They need to be reprogrammed now to be compatible with the new notes.”

New BD10 and BD20 currency notes were introduced recently in Bahrain to enhance security.

According to a circular distributed by the CBB, “the banknotes will be easier to authenticate and harder to duplicate.”

The CBB also assured that the existing banknotes would remain in circulation until further notice.
