Brawl leads to murder in hospital

Manama : The trial of a man who strangled a fellow inmate to death, following a brawl in a psychiatric hospital, has begun.

The defendant, a Nigerian, was kept in an observation room with the victim, a Bahrain citizen.

The murder reportedly took place at around 5:30 in the morning on June 7, 2016. A nurse, who tried to save the victim was also attacked.

The defendant was soon overpowered by other nurses in the hospital. However, they were not able to revive the victim, who was declared dead after 25 minutes.

“The defendant was suffering from mental disorder, and avoided everyone. He even tried to commit suicide on multiple occasions,” a nurse told prosecutors.

She also added that the condition of the defendant had improved over time.

However, a medical panel which probed the incident announced that the defendant did not have any  major mental disorders and was aware of everything.

Earlier police arrested the accused for stealing mobile phones from the hotel where he worked as a security guard. Later he was shifted to the psychiatric hospital.

The accused was not brought to the court yesterday which led to the trial being adjourned to November 14.
