Cleric, woman jail term reduced in adultery case

ManamaA cleric and a woman implicated in an adultery case have had their jail terms reduced on appeal. The woman, aged 26, and mother of two, is accused of having a sexual affair with the cleric.

The 34-year-old cleric was assigned to provide guidance to the pilgrims, including the woman and her husband. The husband discovered the affair between them after inspecting her mobile phone, and he eventually filed a case against her.

“After returning from pilgrimage, she spent a lot of time on her phone, and began going out under the pretext of meeting friends. I began suspecting her behaviour and eventually found out that she was in a relationship with the cleric,” he said.

The pair were earlier given one year in prison each, but the High Criminal Appeals Court reduced it to only six months behind bars each.
