Attempt to attack HM the King’s procession thwarted

ManamaA group of people were arrested in London while attempting to attack the procession of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa during his visit there.

As shown in a widely circulated video online, an individual attempted to block the path of the procession on Downing Street, while others cheered for him, before he was stopped by the police.

The British police immediately arrested the man, handcuffed him and remanded him in custody. Another man from the same group was also arrested, while a few others were attempting to convince the police to release them.

According to sources, the attackers are a group of former Bahraini citizens, who are wanted in Bahrain for their involvement in several terrorism-related cases, and are granted asylum by the British Government.

The incident happened while groups of Bahraini citizens and students in the UK gathered on the vital road to greet HM the King.

The Bahraini Ambassador to the UK, Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa posted a picture of the gathering on his personal page on Twitter and thanked them for their national stance.

Condemned

Meanwhile, the attempted assault on HM the King’s procession was nationally condemned and described as an act of cowardice. Bahraini activists, politicians, intellectuals and columnists denounced the group on different platforms.

The Kingdom’s legislators issued a joint statement strongly condemning the occurrence. The lawmakers said in their statement that “such barbaric acts negatively affect the historic relations between both Kingdoms.”

They demanded that the British authorities take firm and immediate actions against those involved.

The House of Representatives’ First Deputy Speaker Ali Al Aradi said, “These outlaws should be punished by the law for their illegal acts. Such behaviours don’t represent the simplest standards of freedom of expression.”

The Council’s Financial and Economic Affairs Committee Chairman Abdulrahman Buali said, “The British authorities should take immediate actions against the people behind these criminal acts.” He also described them as a “group of criminals who’re unfortunately protected by the British Government.”

MPs Adel Al Assoomy, Khalid Al Shaer, Abdulrahman Bumjaid, Jamal Buhassan, Nasser Al Qasseer, Jalal Kadhem Al Mahfoudh and Ghazi Al Rahma also denounced the incident.

The MPs added that “the repetition of such occurrences weren’t accepted and would definitely harm the Bahraini-British ties.”
