Incitement: Ex-society official loses appeal

ManamaAn ex-General Secretary of a local society, who was convicted of inciting the public to overthrow the government, has lost his appeal.

Ibrahim Sharif was earlier sentenced to one year behind the bars after he was tried in connection with a speech he delivered in July 2015. During the speech, the defendant encouraged the public to overthrow the regime.

He was only released from jail in June 2015 after serving just over four years of a five-year prison sentence.

He was one of the 21 men convicted in 2011 in connection with a plot to overthrow the government with help from abroad. Some of them were jailed for life, but he was found not guilty and was sentenced to five years for espionage.
