Green light for sacking 50pc expatriates in public sector

Manama : Half of the non-Bahraini employees working in the public sector may lose their jobs once their work permits expire.

This would become a reality if a parliamentary proposal to sack 50 per cent of expats working in governmental institutions comes into effect.

The MPs passed the proposal during their regular weekly meeting yesterday, supporting the concept of “giving unemployed Bahrainis a chance.” The proposal stipulated not to renew work contracts of non-Bahrainis working in governmental establishments.

The lawmakers and the government representative at the council, Shura Council and Representatives Council Affairs Minister Ghanem Al Buainain, had a prolonged discussion before majority of MPs voted for the proposal.

It was initially submitted by MP Jalal Kadhem Al Mahfoudh in February. Al Mahfoudh stated back then that the proposal would help employing qualified Bahraini cadres and reduce unemployment rates.

The proposal will now be referred to Shura Council, which will revise it before returning it to the Parliament, so it could receive the final approval and be referred to the government.
